MalaMala Diary Entry: 4 April, 1998

Sunset

The approach of the dry season fills the air with dust and sunsets and sunrises at Mala Mala should be more spectacular than ever before.

Secretary birds are widespread over Africa but probably nowhere common, each Secretary birdpair having a territory which can cover many acres. Although these terrestrial eagles are noted snake killers, other creatures such as mice and insects probably make up the majority of their diets. A pair of secretary birds has been nesting on Mala Mala for some years now.

Leopard Leopard femaleviewing continues to be good. The approximately eighteen-month old male cub of the Hlabatini female is one of the frequently seen leopards and being young, brave and inquisitive has provided hours of entertaining viewing - from catching mice to chasing rhinos and climbing trees. This young leopard was this month seen quite far out of the territory of his mother, a first for him and a sign of growing independence.Leopard with prey It can be expected that he will soon be abandoned to his own devices, eventually wandering off. Occupying the territory immediately to the south of the range of his mother is the White Cloth female, sister to the Kapen female and daughters of the late Trollips Crossing female.

The White Cloth female was recently seen dragging a freshly killed adult female impala beneath a thicket and then heading off to fetch her six-month old cub. Once she had found her cub, the pair returned to the kill.
